The Tacoma Fuji Taiko group formed in February 2009. We primarily perform for Temple events (New Year’s party, Bon Odori, Northwest Buddhist Convention). Our public performances have included being the kick off event for University of Washington Tacoma’s Asian Pacific American Heritage month, Proctor Fest and a golf tournament fundraiser for Japan Relief efforts.

Our name, “Fuji Taiko” represents our Japanese and Buddhist heritage. “Fuji” has the dual meaning of Mt. Rainier (which many Japanese immigrants referred to as Fuji since it reminded them of Mt. Fuji in Japan) and also meaning “wisteria” which is a symbol of Jodo Shinshu Budhisim. Our logo which depicts Mt. Rainier with the wisteria Japanese mon as the moon is encompassed within a Zen circle – bringing the two symbols together as in our name, “Fuji”.
